LOS ANGELES, CA - One night after losing its WCC opener in five games to perennial West Coast power Pepperdine, No. 12 San Diego (11-2; 1-1 WCC) rebounded with a 3-2 victory over host Loyola Marymount (11-4; 0-2 WCC) Saturday night at LMU's Gersten Pavilion. USD dominated the decisive fifth game to claim the match by scores of (27-30, 30-25, 26-30, 30-26 and 15-6). San Diego's All-WCC middle hitter
Christie Dawson had a career high 24 kills-hitting at an efficient .513 to complement a 35-kill effort from teammate
Kristen Carlson.
Dawson, a junior from Apple Valley, California, who's career hitting percentage (.315) is tops all-time in USD history, had just four errors in 39 attacks to pace the Toreros. Dawson benefited from another outstanding effort from All-America teammate Lindsey Sherburne, who totaled 74 assists (14.8 p/g).
Down the stretch Sherburne set the Toreros to hitting a clip of .600 en route to a 15-6 Game Five victory. LMU had won game's one and three, in an unsuccessful bid to deal San Diego a second consecutive WCC defeat. USD's road win drops LMU's 2005 WCC record to 0-2. The Lions suffered a four-game setback to No. 15 Santa Clara on Friday.
USD sophomore Erin Wiskar added 10 kills for a San Diego team that returns home to host Portland (Friday 7pm) and Gonzaga (Saturday 7pm) next weekend.
