SANTA CLARA, CA - No. 14 Santa Clara remains unbeaten in West Coast Conference play, knocking off league rival and 15th-ranked USD in four games Saturday afternoon at SCU's Leavey Center. San Diego (14-3; 3-2 WCC) played the majority of the match without junior attacker
Kristen Carlson (Purcellville, VA), who was forced to leave Game One with a serious leg injury. Carlson entered the week ranked 8th nationally in kills per game (5.45) and had been named the WCC Player of the Month for September. Game scores went (27-30, 30-8, 30-16 and 31-29).
San Diego jumped out to an early 8-3 Game One lead and despite the injury to Carlson in the game's later stages, USD held on to take the opening frame 30-27. Torero junior Christie Dawson (Apple Valley, CA) finished the night with a match-high 18 kills and senior setter Lindsey Sherburne (Saratoga, CA) posted her seventh double-double of the year, passing out 34 assists while totaling 12 digs.
Santa Clara (16-1; 5-0 WCC) took advantage of Carlson's absence, winning easily in Game Two 30-8. Using a balanced attack that had three different players reach double-figures in kills, the Broncos improved to 7-0 at home this season, with three home wins coming against ranked opposition. The win also allows SCU to stay atop the WCC standings with a perfect 5-0 league record thus far in 2005.
