SAN DIEGO, CA - Loyola Marymount snapped No. 20 San Diego's 16-match home winning-streak, pulling out a five-game victory at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion Friday night. San Diego (15-5; 4-4 WCC) had not lost on its home floor since Oregon State upset the Toreros in September of 2004. Game scores went (19-30, 30-19, 26-30, 30-15 & 15-9). Loyola Marymount (16-6; 4-4 WCC) staved off elimination by routing USD in Game Four and received four kills from junior OH Sandy Krone in Game Five to earn a split of the season series.
USD junior MH Christie Dawson put down a match-best 23 kills, reaching the 20-kill plateau for the sixth time this season. Dawson and teammate MH Moira McCarthy each had six kills in the opening game, allowing the Toreros an early one-game advantage. McCarthy would finish with 16 kills and All-WCC libero Jackie Bernardin had 29 digs.
LMU's defense limited the Toreros to a hitting clip of just .050 in Game Two and -.022 in Game Four- both lopsided Lion victories. Freshman OH Emily Day hit .394 and totaled a team-high 15 kills. Senior defensive specialist Michelle Look had 21 digs for LMU and sophomore teammate Christiana Reneau added 19 in the winning effort.
San Diego played without OH Kristen Carlson, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury against St. Mary's one week ago. Carlson had 35 kills in USD's five-game win over LMU in Los Angeles in early October.
The Toreros will try and rebound when West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine visits the JCP Saturday night at 7pm.
