SAN DIEGO, CA - No. 20 San Diego finished its 2005 regular season home schedule 10-1 and improved to 21-5 overall after pinning a five-game loss on league rivals St. Mary's Saturday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Torero freshman Jeanne Fairchild had a career night, putting down 19 kills and sophomore
Erin Wiskar added 18 for USD. Behind 23 kills from Missie Stidham the Gaels rallied from two games down, but were outlasted by the Toreros by game scores of (30-28, 30-23, 21-30, 27-30 and 15-11).
USD honored the outstanding collegiate careers of All-America setter Lindsey Sherburne, two-time WCC Defender of the Year Jackie Bernardin and four-year letter-winner Monica Peterson before Saturday night's match. The trio allowed San Diego to enjoy success never before reached in over 20-years of Division I volleyball on San Diego's campus. The three graduating student-athletes all played a major role in three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2004 season in which USD finished as unbeaten WCC Champions and advanced in the NCAA's Sweet 16.
San Diego (21-5; 10-4 WCC) avenges an October 21st five-game defeat to St. Mary's (17-9; 8-6 WCC) to claim a split of the season series. Gael freshman MB Brittany Barker had seven blocks and teammates, Stidham, Christine Kennedy and Mandy Bible each finished with six.
USD finishes up the regular season Tuesday with a 7pm match at Cal State Fullerton.
