Gonzaga University sophomore Becky Jones had 15 kills and senior Lacey Bell added 9 but it was not enough as the 22nd-ranked University of San Diego Toreros (17-5, 6-4 WCC) charged past the Bulldogs in three games. USD won the contest 30-16, 30-24, 30-23. Gonzaga fell to 10-16 on the season, 2-7 in the WCC.
Gonzaga was sluggish in the opening game as the Bulldogs quickly fell behind a hot hitting USD squad. Christie Dawson led the Toreros as they hit .406 with 17 team kills and only four errors. The Toreros would be sharp all night long with only 13 errors over the three-game span and a .414 clip for the night. Dawson led all players with 19 kills for USD, hitting .533 along the way.
The Bulldogs came out determined in game two as they jumped out to a 7-point lead. Jones hammered home four cross court winners as she helped the Bulldogs hit .333 for the game. USD was again able to rally and eventually tied the game at 22 before winning eight of the final ten points. Jones hit .119 for the night as she moved within five kills of cracking the Gonzaga single-season Top 10 list. She will get her chance on Saturday as the Bulldogs host their second ranked opponent in as many days with No. 11 Santa Clara University visiting Martin Centre.
In the final game Gonzaga kept pace in the early portion of the match by Dawson and Erin Wiskar pulled San Diego out to a comfortable lead as the closed out Gonzaga. Wiskar also reached double figure kills with 12 on 26 attacks. Lindsey Sherburne passed out 53 assists while GU setter Heather Dunn had 31. With the win San Diego sweeps the regular-season series from the Bulldogs winning both matches 3-0.
Dunn also added 8 kills with a .333 attack percentage while Briawna Mueller also chipped in with 8. Jessica Herrera was the team leader with 7 digs. USD libero Jackie Bernardin led all players with 15 digs.
