SAN DIEGO, CA - San Diego made seven three-pointers in the second half to comeback and defeat Point Loma Nazerene 73-66 in a season-opening exhibition game for both schools at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion Wednesday night.
USD senior Lindsay Helvey scored a team-high 15 points, making a pair of timely three-point baskets down the stretch to make first-year Toreros head coach Cindy Fisher a winner in her USD coaching debut.
San Diego was just 3-of-16 from three-point range in the first half and a quick start after the break by Point Loma Nazerene put USD behind by as many as 15 in the early stages of the second half.
Point Loma Nazarene, a team that was 33-5 and ranked 4th nationally in the final NAIA poll a year ago, received a game-high 20 points from La Jolla High School product, center Angela Manjarrez, who made good on 5-of-7 shots and scored 11 points in the first half.
Michelle Augustavo was one of five Toreros to reach double-figures in scoring. Augustavo scored 10 points and fueled San Diego's long-range shooting spree by making two three-pointers during an 8-0 Torero run with just over 15 minutes to play to get USD within five at 42-37.
USD methodically cut into the Sea Lions lead and a triple by true freshman Kelly Winther at the 9:10 mark put San Diego in front 53-51, the Toreros first lead since owning a 3-2 advantage in the game's opening moments. Winther scored 10 in her first collegiate game and USD junior Sabine Loewe collected a team-high 10 rebounds.
Loewe and Helvey scored 12 consecutive points for USD to give San Diego a 68-62 lead with just under two minutes on the clock and the Toreros were able to hold on to win by seven.
USD will continue its exhibition schedule this Saturday at 5pm against an Australian Touring Team in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
