Bulldog guard Chantella Perera (Wantrina, Victoria) scored a game-high 21 points, 15 coming from beyond the arc.
Ashley Voisinet (Irvine, CA) had her first career double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) for a San Diego team that committed just 10 turnovers.
A pair of rebounds and athletic baskets from Fresno State junior guard Jasmine Plummer (Sacramento, CA), followed by three-point baskets from Perera and Amy Parrish (Hanford, CA), highlighted a fast Bulldogs start in which Fresno State built up an eight-point lead, 19-11, after the first nine minutes of play.
San Diego answered by generating points off defensive stops. Sophomore guard Amanda Rego (San Diego, CA) connected on a long three-pointer from the top of the key, and then fed Brandi Collato (Del Mar, CA) in transition to initiate a 17-5 USD run that was sustained by three buckets from Voisinet late in the half, allowing the Toreros a 28-26 advantage at the break.
It was Fresno State regaining control in the opening moments of the second half with consecutive offensive rebounds leading to another Perera three-pointer, putting the Bulldogs up 39-34 with 12:40 remaining. Perera was 5-of-12 from three-point range and cleared eight rebounds.
Fresno State continued to dominate the glass and despite San Diego fighting back to tie the game 42-42, the Bulldogs held a five-point lead with just over three minutes on the clock.
A lay-up by Parrish with 1:38 left made the score 56-49 and the Bulldogs held on to win by the six-point margin.
San Diego will take an East Coast road trip to play ACC members Georgia Tech (Friday 7pm) and Clemson (Sunday 2pm) this weekend.
