(San Diego, CA) - No. 24 USC's 6-1 victory over San Diego Tuesday dropped the Toreros' 2005 home record to 3-9-1 and allowed the Trojans to sweep the two-game season series between the two regional rivals.
San Diego (16-11-1) threatened by consistently putting runners in scoring position, but could only score one run in support of senior starter Sean Warlop (0-2). Warlop pitched well, allowing three earned runs on six hits spanning five-plus innings of work.
Senior third baseman Jamie Hesselgesser went 3-for-4, increasing his season average to a team-leading .347. All-West Coast Conference (WCC) first baseman Randy Curtis extended his hitting streak to nine games, driving in San Diego's lone run on an RBI-single in the fifth.
Southern California (10-6) received a pair of hits from centerfielder Daniel Perales, who went 2-for-4, highlighted by a solo homerun in the second inning. Perales' round-tripper, his first of the year, initiated the scoring. The Trojans, ranked 24rd in the latest national poll released by Collegiate Baseball, went on to tack on two more runs in the fourth to assume a 3-0 lead.
The Toreros spotted USC three runs, negating any chance of a late comeback. The first came on a would-be inning-ending groundball in the fourth inning and a pair more were allowed later on pitching mistakes by Torero relievers.
San Diego will play a three-game WCC divisional series with Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles this weekend.
