(San Diego, CA) - No. 29 Pepperdine managed to take Game Three of a West Coast Conference (WCC) weekend series with San Diego, winning 5-3 Sunday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
San Diego (24-18-1; 10-8 WCC) received a solid pitching performance from freshman starter Matt Couch and classmate Logan Gelbrich hit a two-run homer in the USD fifth.
Pepperdine (24-12; 11-3 WCC) benefited from six-plus innings of three-run baseball from rookie starter Barry Enright and staked an early three-run lead to salvage a game of the weekend set.
Enright (5-1) allowed 10 hits and three runs (all earned) before being lifted with two outs in the USD seventh. Enright looked on as relievers James Johnson and Doug Konoske worked out of late inning threats from the USD offense to secure the victory. Konoske pitched an inning and a third to earn his first save.
Couch (2-3) was effective in eight complete frames. The freshman right-hander scattered nine hits and allowed four runs (three earned), but was saddled with the loss.
Pepperdine designated hitter Taylor Klosowski went 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Waves. All-WCC catcher Chad Tracy, son of current Los Angeles Dodger manager Jim Tracy, added two hits in five official at-bats.
Gelbrich's second homerun of the season, a high drive down the leftfield line in the bottom of the fifth inning, cut Pepperdine's advantage to 3-2. The Waves answered with a run off Couch in the top of the seventh and added another off senior Sean Warlop in the ninth to make a winner out of Enright.
