(Santa Clara, Calif.) - The USD Toreros overcame a 16 point first half deficit to rally with a big 2nd half and hand host Santa Clara an 85-70 defeat at the Leavey Center. Amanda Rego scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half as USD was down at intermission, 47-34. Senior guard Tiara Harris turned in a huge game as she led the team with 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Rego notched a double-double as she claimed 10 rebounds and 5 steals to go with her 23 points. She canned 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point line. Ashley Voisinet returned from injury to chip in with 13 points and 7 rebounds. With the win USD improves to 6-10 and 1-2 in the WCC, Santa Clara falls to 7-9 and 1-2.
In the first half USD battled to a 24-22 lead with 10:18 to go on a Voisinet three-pointer, but Santa Clara buckled down and closed out the half strong in taking a 13-point advantage into the locker room. After intermission the Toreros got down to business and would go on to outscore the Broncos 51-33 over the final 20 minutes. Two free throws by Polly Dong knotted the score at 55-all, then Rego scored 8 straight points on a three-pointer, a three-point play, and layup to forge a 63-55 lead, and Sabine Loewe scored on layup for a 10-point lead and the USD was never threatened the rest of the way. Every time Santa Clara made a move, a Torero would step up and make a key basket.
For the game USD outrebounded Santa Clara 45-35 with 25 boards coming off of the offensive glass. The Toreros were also solid from the free throw line where they made 23-32 (72%). Santa Clara was paced by Chandice Cronk with 18 points. USD continues WCC road play next weekend with games at Gonzaga and Portland.
