San Diego vs. Duke

Dec. 2, 2006

Recap | Box Score

San Diego Interim Head Coach Brent Hilliard

(on what another trip to the Sweet 16 means to the Torero program) : "Winning in the NCAA Tournament makes a statement on where your program is going. This is our second trip to the Sweet 16 in the last three years, so that speaks to the consistency of our program. The key truly is consistency and chemistry. We've been able to win our conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament each year. That fact is important in order to keep our program consistent on a national level."

(on San Diego's success in five-game matches, 4-1 in 2006): "My opinion is that the fifth game is really hit or miss. The fact that we are doing well in them this season is due more to the chemistry of our team. Our kids have to click in tough, nerve-wracking conditions. They've worked to become best friends and teammates and have developed a solid chemistry as a team."

San Diego player Kristen Carlson

"I am very excited with our win today and in advancing on to the Sweet 16. We played Nebraska back at the beginning of the season, so our goal has long been to play them again this year on somewhere other than their home court. I'm just really proud of my team and how well we played today."

(on team's success in five-game matches in 2006): "We just refuse to lose. In the beginning of the season we struggled a little in longer matches, but I believe that playing in those situations made us stronger as a team. Of course, as a fifth-year senior I was actually thinking during the fifth game that it could be my last game. I didn't want that, so I knew we had to get it done, and we did."

Duke Head Coach Jolene Nagel

"I think we had two incredible matches here. It was a battle last night against Tennessee; they are a very good team. Today, it was another battle. I couldn't be more proud of our team and how we battled the entire time. It was a great weekend for us to grow as a team and put ourselves out there on the line. This team has been so much fun to coach. They have so many high expectations for themselves and they hold each other accountable for that. They push each other everyday in the gym and challenged each other, and that's why we were able to continue to get better and make the most of our team. They are a very special group and have had a very special year. We hope to celebrate their many accomplishments."
