SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - In a role reversal from last weeks three-point win over the University of San Francisco, the Dons came out with a three-point win Wednesday evening against the University of San Diego, 59-56, in a West Coast Conference game at War Memorial Gym.
With the loss the Toreros fall to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in the WCC. With the win San Francisco snaps a six-game losing streak and improves to 7-17 overall and 3-8 in the WCC.
After holding a nine-point advantage at the break, 32-23, the Toreros allowed USF to climbed back into the contest, allowing the Dons to take a 42-41 lead with 13:57 remaining on a Jennifer Katsuyama 3-pointer. After shooting .500 (10-20) from the field in the first half, USD went cold, converting on just .320 (8-25) after the break. Meanwhile the Dons shot .536 (15-28) in the second period and .511 (24-47) for the game.
Freshman guard Kelly Winther led the Toreros with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting off the bench, while senior guard Polly Dong added eight points for San Diego and senior guard Tiara Harris had seven points, ending her eight-game double digit scoring streak.
The Toreros will continue their final regular-season road swing on Friday as they head to Moraga, Calif. for a 7 p.m. WCC game with Saint Mary's College.
