ATHENS, Ga. - The eighth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team, suffered a 3-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader with the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia Sunday morning at Foley Field.
With the loss the Toreros fall to 7-5 overall and have dropped their past four contests. With the win Georgia improves to 5-0 and has claimed the three-game series with USD.
The Bulldogs broke into the scoring column first in the second inning as Josh Morris hit a solo home run to left field.
The Toreros would respond in the top of the seventh inning. After a Daniel Magness single, Keoni Ruth reached on a fielder's choice with Magness being thrown out at second. Ruth then stole second and came across home plate on a Shane Buschini single to centerfield to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bulldogs then tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win.
Brian Matusz (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out a season-high 11 in eight innings of work. The Bulldogs' Rip Warren (1-0) was credited with the win allowing one run on three hits in seven innings of work.
Buschini was the offensive leader for USD going 1-for-4 with one RBI. Steve Singleton saw his 11-game hit streak come to a end going 0-for-3.
The Toreros will look to avoid the sweep and snap a four-game losing skid as they continue their doubleheader with the Bulldogs at 10:00 a.m. (PST) at Foley Field.
