(San Diego, CA) - It wasn't pretty but the USD Toreros (5-5) dealt visiting San Jose State (3-2) a 60-40 loss tonight before 1,643 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD will take their modest 2-game winning streak to Albuquerque, New Mexico this Saturday to take on the UNM Lobos (7-2) in a 12 noon (PST) contest. USD guard Brandon Johnson finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals (one shy of school record) in leading the Toreros to victory. Gyno Pomare added 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and chipped in with 4 blocked shots.
The Toreros took a 25-14 lead into the locker room at intermission as the visiting Spartans managed to make just 7-of-29 shots (24.1%). It didn't get much better for SJSU in the 2nd half (8-25) as they converted just 27.8% of their shots overall. For USD, Rob Jones chipped in with 9 points; De'Jon Jackson added 6 points, 5 boards and 4 assists; and Chris Lewis added 4 points and 5 rebounds.
San Jose State was paced by DeVonte Thomas off the bench with 11 points and 8 rebounds. USD finished the game with 8 total blocked shots, just two shy of the school mark.
