USD Falls to No. 9 Minnesota, 3-1.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The 12th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 (30-28, 23-30, 24-30, 29-31) by the ninth-ranked University of Minnesota Sunday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Tournament.

With the loss, the Toreros have now lost three consecutive matches and fall to 2-3 overall. With the win, Minnesota improves to 2-2 overall.

Jaimarie Sutherland had a match and career-high 20 kills, on 43 attempts while only committing four errors to post a team-best .372 attack percentage. Amy DeGroot added in 13 kills and Laurel Abrahamson was the third Torero in double-digit kills with 10. Jessica Nyrop recoded a team-best 33 assists in the match and Andrea Csaszi recorded a match-best 22 digs.

For the Golden Gophers, Brook Dieter tied Sutherland for a match-best 20 kills, while Kyla Roehrig (18) Jessy Jones (14) and Lauren Gibbemeyer (12) were the other three Minnesota players in double-digit kills. Rachel Hartman recorded a match-best 56 assists in helping the team to a .243 attack percentage.

In game one, USD captured the first point on a Torey Ellick kill and would eventually build their lead up to four at 14-10 thanks to a kill by DeGroot and an Erin Wiskar service ace. USD would never look back as they held the lead for the remainder of the game.

In game two, it was Minnesota who grabbed the first point on a ball handling error by USD. After USD tied the game at 1-1 on a Ellick kill, the Golden Gophers used a 5-1 run to gain the early momentum, and they never looked back and went on to capture game two by a score of 30-23.

In game three, the Golden Gopher took the early advantage as they jumped out to an early 10-5 lead thanks to a Roehrig kill and they would eventually build their lead up to as many as seven at 20-13 on a Gibbemeyer kill and Minnesota would to go on to claim game two by a final of 30-24.

In the fourth and final game, it was a close battle with each team having their turn with the lead. Late in the game with the score knotted at 27-27, Dieter recorded a kill for Minnesota, which game the Golden Gophers the lead for good, as they won the game 31-29.

The Toreros will look to snap their three-game skid when they return to action on Friday as they open play in the USD Invitational against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion..
