Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 17-kill performance form junior outside hitter Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, the 13th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over No. 21 Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 win, the Toreros improve to 20-4 overall and move to 10-2 in the WCC. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-8 overall and 8-5 in the WCC.

DeGroot led all players with 17 kills on 32 attempts and only committed three errors to post a .438 attack percentage. Ali Troost was the second USD player in double-digit kills as she had 13 on 22 attempts to post a .409 attack percentage. Andrea Csaszi had a match-best 17 digs and Jessica Nyrop recorded a match-best 39 assists in helping direct the USD offense to a .352 attack percentage.

In the first set, it was a sea saw battle right from the get-go. Both teams had their turn with the lead and neither team had a lead bigger than two. Then with the set tied at 20, a DeGroot kill off a set from Nyrop sparked a 5-2 run that was capped on a SCU attack error to give USD a 25-22 win.

The second set was very similar to the first in that it was a close battle with both teams taking a lead and neither team having a lead bigger than three for a majority of the set. With the score knotted at 18, a Troost kill off a set from Nyrop gave the Toreros the lead for good, as USD would go on to outscore SCU 6-3 down the stretch to take a two games to none lead heading into the break.

In the third and final set, San Diego would grab the early momentum and never look back. With the score knotted at 4-4, a Colleen Carlson kill ignited a 10-3 San Diego run that was capped on a SCU attack error to give USD a comfortable 14-7 lead. San Diego would then cruise their way to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they head to Los Angeles to play Loyola Marymount in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
