SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A Kyle Ochoa shot late in the second half prevented the loss as the University of San Diego men's soccer team ended their 2008 campaign with a double overtime tie to the Santa Clara University Broncos.
The Toreros improve to 6-10-4 overall and 6-5-1 as they say goodbye to seniors Eddie Ahman, Dane McCleary and Tommy McClain. The Broncos improve to 4-9-7 overall and 2-5-5 in the WCC.
In the middle of the first half, Torero forward Jesse Baker had an opportunity for a goal. On a break away sprint down the field, Baker weaved through traffic and fired off a point blank shot at goal from 20 yards out which was blocked by Bronco goalkeeper Kevin Klasila.
The first goal came in the 38th minute by forward Sean Danzeiser. Eric Masch dribbled through traffic up the near side and running out of field space. Masch centered the ball just before the out of bounds line to Danzeiser who fired off a shot above Torero goalkeeper Kelin Briones in the upper right corner for the 1-0 lead.
San Diego scored the equalizer on a goal by Kyle Ochoa late in the second half. At the 80th minute, Corey Norris sent a long pass from the far side up field to Ochoa who was in the penalty box. Collecting the ball with one touch, Ochoa fired off a shot from 18 yards out past the keeper to for the 1-1 tie.
Regulation ended at a tie as the two teams prepared for overtime. Both teams battled for domination and a chance to put away the golden goal, however neither team was able to score as the overtime periods expired leaving the score knotted up.
Santa Clara out-shot USD 13-7 and had a 7-2 margin in corner kicks. Kelin Briones recorded three saves to Kevin Klasila's two saves. The Toreros await to see how the WCC standings play out at the chance for post season play which will be announced Monday afternoon at approximately 3:00 p.m. west coast time on ESPN News.
