SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Amy Mahinalani DeGroot's match-best 16 kills paced the 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Yale University Tuesday evening in the season-finale at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros finish the regular-season with a 23-4 overall record. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 19-5 overall.
DeGroot recorded her 16 kills on 36 attempts, while only committing three attack errors to post a .361 attack percentage. DeGroot also recorded 11 digs to post a double-double. Andrea Csaszi recorded a match-best 14 digs and Jessica Nyrop recorded 29 assists in helping direct the USD offense to a .379 attack percentage.
In the first set, the Bulldogs held even with USD in the early going, then with the score knotted at 10-10, a DeGroot kill off a set from Nyrop ignited a 7-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Ali Troost kill to give USD a 17-12 lead. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the Toreros raced out to a 14-4 lead, as a Torey Ellick kill sparked the run and a Colleen Carlson kill capped things off to give the Toreros all the momentum. USD eased their way to a 25-10 win and took a two-games-to-none lead into the break.
In the third and final set, the Bulldogs made things interesting as they were hanging around with the Toreros point-for-point. Finally with the score knotted at 16-16, an Ellick kill off a set from Kelsi Myers gave USD back the lead they would not surrender, as they went on an 8-2 run to take complete control of the set. USD completed the sweep with a 25-20 win.
