MALIBU, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team suffered a 65-51 loss to Pepperdine University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 15-12 overall, 6-7 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 9-17 overall and 4-9 in the WCC and have now won three straight games.
Amber Sprague led the team in scoring with 12 points, while also pulling down nine rebounds. The second USD player in double figures was Brianna Estell, who added in 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field. Sam Child led the tam in rebounds with 10, while adding in nine points. As a team, the Toreros shot 34 percent from the field and out rebounded Pepperdine 40-37.
The Waves came out hot in the first half as they and jumped out to a 15-2 lead over the first nine minutes of action and would finish the half with a 55.2% shooting percentage while the Toreros were held to a 28.6% mark. The Waves would maintain the double-digit lead and go into the break with a 34-17 lead.
The second half was more of the same as the Waves would maintain the double0digit lead and would eventually go on to build up their lead to as many as 24 at 51-27 with 12:00 to go. The Toreros would eventually make a run in the second half. With the score at 56-34, a pair of Amanda Rego free throws ignited a 26-4 USD run to pull San Diego to within 10 with just 1:48 to go. But the Toreros could get no closer as the Waves would hang on to claim a 65-51 win.
The Toreros will return to action when they conclude the regular-season on Saturday in a 2 p.m. game against Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif.
