Titans Snap USD's 10-Game Winning Streak

March 25, 2008

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 21 Cal State Fullerton scored four runs in the first inning that proved to be too much for the 14th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team to overcome in a 6-3 non-conference loss at Cunningham Stadium.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 17-8 overall and saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Titans improve to 13-8 overall.

The Titans wasted no time in scoring as they put up four runs on three hits in the first inning. The Titans runs, which all came with two outs, were scored on a Jared Clark run-scoring double, a Joel Weeks bases-loaded walk, run three came when Dustin Garneau was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the final CSF run came on a Gary Brown RBI single to give the Titans a 4-0 lead.

After the Titans added one more run in the second, San Diego then took two runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Sean Nicol got things started with a walk and freshman third baseman Victor Sanchez then launched his first home run of the game, a two run blast over the left field fence to cut the deficit to three. James Meador then doubled down the left field line to keep things rolling. Anthony Strazzara singled to left field, and Meador rounded third and headed for home. The CSF left fielder made a throw from left field that put the Titan catcher in the air at the plate, he caught the ball but Meador slid head first into the plate and didn't appeared to be tagged out, but the home plate umpire called it an out ending the USD scoring threat and leaving the score at 5-3.

Fullerton then took back one run in the fourth inning on a Jared Clark run-scoring double, which scored Josh Fellhauer, who had singled.

The Toreros would score their final run of the game in the fifth inning on a Sanchez solo home run over the left field fence, which runs Sanchez's home-run total to nine on the season, and also marks the second time this season Sanchez has hit two home runs in a game.

Offensively for the Toreros, Sanchez led the way with his 2-for-4, two home runs and three RBI performance. The only other Torero to record multiple hits was Meador, who went 2-for-4 with one double.

Ricardo Pecina (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed four runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Travis Kelly (1-0) picked up the win for the Titans as he allowed two runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they host Harvard University in a 2 p.m. game at Cunningham Stadium.
