SEATTLE, Wash. - The 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (9-2) saw its three-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-9) loss to the 10th-ranked University of Washington (9-1) Friday evening in a non-conference match.
Amy Mahinalani DeGroot led the team with her six kills, with Ashton Basch adding in five kills and Ali Troost chipping in with four kills. Jessica Nyrop led the team with her 16 assists and Andrea Csaszi had a team-best nine digs.
In the first set, a Torey Ellick solo block ignited a 3-1 San Diego run that was capped on a serving error by Washington to give USD the early momentum. The Huskies then went on a 3-1 run of their own to even the score at 4-4. Washington then used an 8-1 run to gain total control of the set and went on to win set one by a score of 25-16.
In set two, San Diego kept things close in the early going, then with the score at 9-5 in favor of the Huskies, the Toreros went on a 4-2 run that was sparked on a UW attack error and capped on a Nyrop kill to allow USD to pull back to with in two at 11-9. But the Huskies then went on an 8-1 run to regain control of the momentum, and they would go on to claim set two by a final of 25-13.
In the third set, the Toreros were even with the Huskies in the early going, then with the score knotted at 2-2, Washington used a 9-2 run to take the early momentum and a 11-4 lead. Washington never let up as they went on to seal the win with a 25-9 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they remain in Seattle and take on Seattle University in a 12 p.m. non-conference match.
