MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman Stephanie Ochs' first collegiate goal lifted the 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team (3-2) to a 1-0 win over the University of Iowa (2-3) Sunday afternoon at the Pepperdine Nike Challenge.
In the 33rd minute of action, Ochs took control of the ball, dribbled it into the goal box and rocketed off a laser strike into the upper left corner of the goal and the ball found its way into back of the net to give the Toreros the victory.
The Hawkeyes weren't without their scoring opportunities as in the second minute of action Iowa's Kelsey Shaw headed a shot towards the Toreros goal, only to have USD's freshman goalkeeper Courtney Parsons record her first save of the match.
San Diego had a decisive 13-8 advantage in shots taken and held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
USD's Parsons got her second collegiate start and posted her second shutout in goal as she recorded three saves and in three appearances this season, she has yet to let a ball get into the back of the net. Her counterpart Kali Feiereisel was saddled with the loss in goal for the Hawkeyes as she allowed one goal and recorded one save.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they return to the friendly confines of Torero Stadium to take on La Salle University in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
