Toreros Cruise Past Lions

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior right side Ali Troost recorded a team-best 12 kills to help pace the 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 win, the Toreros improve to 15-5 overall and move to 7-2 in the WCC. With the loss, the Lions fall to 10-12 overall and 1-8 in the WCC.

Troost recorded her 12 kills on 22 swings, while only committing two attack errors to post a .455 attack percentage. Kelsi Myers, Colleen Carlson and Carrie Baird all recorded eight kills, with Myers racking up 29 assists in route to pacing the team to a .358 attack percentage. Kayleen Webster had a match-high 12 digs, while Amber Tatsch recorded 10 digs herself.

In the first set, Troost recorded the first point of the match with a kill off a set form Myers, but the Lions then went on a 5-0 run to take the early momentum. The Toreros in turn responded with a 10-1 run of their own that began on a LMU service error and was capped on a LMU ball handling error to give San Diego a 11-6 lead. The Lions were never able to recover after that, as the Toreros eased its way to a 25-16 win.

In the second set, USD grabbed the early momentum as a Troost kill sparked a 4-1 Torero run that was book ended on a Tatsch kill off a set from Myers. The Lions kept things close for a while, then with the score at 13-11 in favor of the Toreros, a Carlson kill off a set from Myers ignited a 6-2 run to give San Diego the momentum. The Toreros never looked back as thy cruised their way to a 25-17 win to take a two sets to none lead into the break.

In the third set, it was a back and forth affair with USD grabbing the early lead, but the Lions never allowed USD to get too far ahead, as they stayed within 2-3 points. Then with the score tied at 19-19, a LMU attack error ignited a 6-2 San Diego run to close out the set and give the Toreros the sweep.

San Diego will return to action on Thursday when they hit the road for the Bay Area to take on Santa Clara in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
