LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team dominated time of possession and out played the Aztecs of San Diego State University in the first round of the NCAA tournament, but fell 1-0 Friday evening at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros end the season with a 12-7-2 overall record. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 15-3-5 and will advance on to play UCLA on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Despite dominating the time of possession in the first half of play, the Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 38th minute of action, when Cat Walker controlled a pass from Gretal Amman and shot from 20 yards out. The ball to hit the far post and bounced back into the net to give SDSU a 1-0 win.
San Diego had a great scoring opportunity come in the 17th minute of action when Natalie Vinti fired off a rocket shot from 20 yards out, but the SDSU goalkeeper was there to record the save.
In the second half, the Toreros came out with urgency and kept the ball in the Aztec side of the field almost the entire half. In the 50th minute of action, Jackie Zinke whipped around the SDSU defense and fired off a laser strike that the SDSU `keeper was able to get her hands on to prevent the goal.
In the 58th minute of action, the Toreros had a golden scoring opportunity not go their way, as Stephanie Ochs slipped behind the SDSU defense, had a brief breakaway and fired off a rocket of a shot that sailed high.
In the 75th minute of action, a free ball sailed over the heads of the SDSU defenders, and bounced high several times. Christine Mock went charging for the ball and hit a laser strike, but again the ball sailed high to prevent the goal.
The Toreros outshot the Aztecs 14-7, and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves. Aubree Southwick picked up the win in goal for SDSU as she allowed no goals and recorded four saves.
