FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team held off a late Cal State Fullerton push to claim a 64-58 victory Monday evening in a non-conference game at Titan Gym.
Sam Child paced the USD offense as she tied for a game-high 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Emily Hatch was the second of four USD players in double figures as she had 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. Dominique Conners, 11 points, and Morgan Woodrow, 10 points, were the other USD players to record double figures. As a team, USD shot .474 from the floor and were out rebounded 40-37.
In the first half, The Toreros (5-5) came out firing on all cylinders as they opened things up with a 6-2 run over the first 4:30 of action. The run was sparked on a Morgan Henderson lay-up and capped on a Henderson jumper.
CSF (3-4) then managed to stay to within four for a majority of the first frame, until the score was at 14-12 in favor of the Toreros. Then an Emily Hatch jumper ignited a 15-4 San Diego run that saw four different Toreros score, and gave USD a 13-point cushion heading into the break up 29-16.
In the second half, the two teams traded basket-for-basket over the first four minutes of action. The Titans then slowly began to chip away at the lead and with the score at 42-37 in favor of the Toreros, Fullerton used a 13-2 run to grab the lead at 50-44 with 6:08 to go.
The two teams then sea sawed back and forth a bit over the next several minutes with the Toreros slowly chipping away at the lead. Finally with 3:40 to go, a Hatch lay-up gave the Toreros back the lead at 57-56.
Finally with a pair of Dominique Conners free throws, USD took a 61-58 lead with 1:09 remaining. The Titans had three opportunities to tie the game and failed on all three, then sent the Toreros to the line for three more points to seal the victory for USD and move the Toreros back to .500 at 4-4.
San Diego will conclude its three-game road-swing on Thursday as they head to Flagstaff, Airz. to take on Northern Arizona University in a 7 p.m. game.
