SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four University of San Diego women's basketball players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Loyola Marymount University claimed a 65-59 West Coast Conference win Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-10 overall, and remain in a tie for fourth in the WCC as they fall to 5-5 in conference action. With the win, the Lions improve to 16-7 overall and move to 6-3 in the WCC.
Sam Child led the team in scoring with a 16-point performance on 7-for-15 shooting from the floor. Kiva Herman was the second USD player in double figures with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting . Dominique Conners was the third player in double figures with 11 points and Amber Sprague added in 10 points. As a team, USD shot 44 percent from the floor, but were outrebounded 32-29.
In the first half, USD jumped out to an early 6-2 lead as a Dominique Conners jumper ignited the 6-0 San Diego run and a Morgan Henderson 3-pointer capped things off.
After a Lisa Helmers jumper pulled the Lions to within two at 6-4, a Amber Sprague jumper then parked a 6-0 San Diego run that was capped on a Kiva Herman jumper to give the Toreros a 12-6 lead with 11:44 to go.
LMU then answered with a 17-4 run over the next five minutes and took a 21-16 lead with 6:53 to go. But the Toreros would respond by outscoring LMU 8-3 over the final seven minutes of the half to go into the break knotted at 24.
In the second half, the early going was even keel, then with the score at 30-29 in favor of the Lions, a Cassady Moore lay-up ignited a 14-6 Lion run, which gave LMU their first double-digit lead at 46-35 with 11:02 to go in the game.
After the Lions build up their largest lead of 14 at 49-35, a Sam Child 3-pointer sparked a 9-3 USD run, which pulled the Toreros back to within eight at 52-44 with 7:42 to go.
San Diego would then slowly chip away at the lead and pulled to within six points on a few occasions over the final minutes of action, but USD could not overcome the deficit and fell 65-59.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they host Pepperdine University in a 2 p.m. game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
