SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Senior forward Kiva Herman scored a game-high 21 points to help lead the University of San Diego women's basketball team to a 68-49 win over the University of San Francisco Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-9 overall and move to 5-4 in the WCC. With the loss, the Dons fall to 6-17 overall and 2-6 in the WCC.
Herman scored her game-high 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the floor. Sam Child was the second USD player in double figures as she scored 17 points and Dominique Conners was the third USD player in double figures as she scored 11 points. As a team, the Toreros shot 50 percent from the field and were out rebounded 37-34.
In the first half, the early going was an even tilt, then with the score at 6-5 in favor of the Toreros, a Sam Child jumper sparked a 7-0 San Diego run to give the Toreros a seven-point advantage at 12-7 with 14:55 remaining in the half. USD would eventually build up their lead to 11 at 20-9 on a Kiva Herman jumper with 8:19 to go.
The Dons then responded with an 11-0 run to even things up at 20 with 5:53 to go in the first half. The Toreros and Dons would then sea saw back and forth over the final five minutes of the half before San Diego took a 28-26 lead going into the break.
In the second half, the Toreros went on a 6-2 run over the first minute and a half of action to take a 34-28 lead.
After a Shay Rollins jumper, San Diego went on a 9-3 run that was sparked on a Herman jumper and capped on a Kaila Mangrum free throw to again give the Toreros a double-digit lead at 43-33 with 12:33 to go.
The Toreros would never look back as they went on to build up their lead to as many as 22 on a few occasions, before settling for the 19-point win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they host Loyola Marymount University in a 7 p.m. game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
