SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 11th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (7-5) was upset again by San Diego State University, 7-6, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
The Aztecs (7-6) got on the scoreboard first, as they scored a pair of runs on two hits in the first inning. The SDSU runs came on a Cory Vaughn sacrifice fly to centerfield and a Brandon Meredith RBI single through the left side.
The Toreros took back one run in their half of the first inning. Kevin Muno led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on an error by the SDSU second baseman. After Muno advanced to third n a Steven Chatwood sacrifice bunt, James Meador drove in Muno with an RBI single to right field to move the score to 2-1.
After SDSU added a run in the top of the second inning, USD would eventually tie the game up with a two-run fifth inning. Austin Green led off the inning with a single through the left side. After Green stole second, Zach Walters moved him to third on an infield single. Bryan Haar drove in Green when he grounded into a double play. Muno then hit a solo home run over the left center field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The Aztecs then scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning on a TJ Thomas run-scoring double, a Matt Parker RBI single and a Brandon Decker RBI single to give SDSU a 6-3 lead.
The Toreros then took back two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Victor Sanchez RBI single and a Walter sacrifice fly to center field to put the game at its final of 6-5.
Offensively for the Toreros, Sean Nicol led the way as he went 3-for-4 with a triple and one run scored. Muno, Sanchez, Engell and Green all recorded a pair of hits as well.
Sammy Solis (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits, while striking gout seven in 6.0 innings of work. Tyler Lavigne (1-1) was credited with the win for the Aztecs as he allowed five runs on 11 hits in 6.0 innings f work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the four-game series with the Aztecs at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
