SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team recorded back-to-back victories Friday night over Portland State University because of solid offense and defense by USD. San Diego improves to 13-25 overall and 3-3 in the PCSC while the Vikings fall to 18-17 and 4-2 in the PCSC.
Taryn Keenan had a three-RBI double in game one to lift USD to a lead and a three-RBI homerun in game two by Taylor Hensley.
In game one, the Toreros took control of a 1-0 deficit in the bottom half of the first inning loading the bases. With Megan Walsh at third base, Lindsey Fleet at second base, and Celeste Soto at first base, Taryn Keenan sent a ball deep into left field clearing the bases for a three-RBI double putting the Toreros ahead 4-1. The Vikings scored two runs in the second inning cutting the lead to 3-4, however the Toreros tallied a run in the bottom of the second inning to pull away again 5-3. Portland scored their fourth run of the game in the fourth inning getting to with-in one run. However the Toreros tallied the winning run in the fifth inning to win 6-4.
Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched a complete game striking out six Vikings in seven innings of work. Taryn Keenan had a double and three RBI and Celeste Soto also recorded a double.
In game two, San Diego and Portland State were tied 3-3 through the first five innings. The Vikings took the lead back in the sixth inning with one run, 4-3. San Diego's Jennifer Ellenbeck led off the inning with a walk. Kristen Gensler sacrifice bunted back to the pitcher moving Ellenbeck to second base. Megan Walsh struck out swinging. The Vikings chose to intentionally walk Lindsey Fleet to first base. Celeste Soto hit an RBI-single to centerfield scoring Ellenbeck from second base and moving Fleet to second base. Coach McElvain elected to pinch-run Kaslyn Tucker for Lindsay Fleet. With runners at first base and second base, Taylor Hensley took the first pitch and ripped a shot high and deep into left field for a three-RBI homerun taking the lead 7-4. That homerun would be the winnings shot for the Toreros.
Kaitlin Healy pitched another complete game for the Toreros and improves to 5-3 overall striking out three batters in seven innings of work. Taylor Hensley recorded her sixth homerun of the season putting her in the top-10 list of homeruns in a single season. Lindsay Fleet's two singles in game two pushes her to 40 hits this season.
The Toreros managed to avoid the showers around the county and hopes their luck will hold through tomorrow as they wrap up the four game series against the Vikings. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
