SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A big 11-run sixth inning, lifted the University of San Francisco baseball team to a 14-5 win over the University of San Diego Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 28-24 overall and drop to 11-9 in the WCC. With the win, the Dons improve to 24-26 overall and move to 9-8 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run on one hit in the bottom of the second inning. Nick McCoy led off the inning with a triple to left centerfield. Two batters later, Austin Green hit a pop up to second base, but the USF second baseman dropped the ball, allowing Green to reach first and McCoy to come across for the first run of the game and give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Dons then evened the score in the top of the fifth inning, as they took advantage of a pair of Torero fielding errors. After Robert Able singled, he stole second, moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher and then came home on a fielding error by the USD outfielder to knot the score at 1-1.
USF then broke open the pitchers duel by scoring 10 runs on 10 hits in the top of the sixth inning. The USF runs came on a Derek Poppert run-scoring triple, a Mason Morioka RBI single, an Abel two-run homer, a Zack Kim two-run single, a Derek Poppert RBI single, a Stephen Yarrow two-run double and a Mason Morioka RBI single to give the Dons a 11-1 lead.
USF would add another run in the top of the seventh inning on an Ethal run-scoring double to give the Dons a 12-1 lead.
USD then took back two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bryan Haar got things started with a stand-up double to left field and Austin Green drove him in with a RBI single through the right side. After Paul Sewald drew a walk, Jon Hotta drove in the next run with a RBI single up the middle to move the score to 12-3.
After the Dons took back two runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Toreros would responded by putting up one run on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. The USD run came on a Green run-scoring double to move the score to 14-4.
The Toreros then scored one more run in the ninth on a fielding error by USF to put the game at its final of 14-5.
Offensively for the Toreros, Green led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Matt Thomson (5-5) is saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. USF's Doug Murray (8-0) picks up the win for the Dons as he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the three-game WCC Series with USF at Cunningham Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
