LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 15th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference match to No. 2 University of Texas Sunday afternoon at the Walter Pyraimid.
With the 20-25, 15-25, 19-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Longhorns improve to 2-0.
Ashton Basch led the USD offense as she recorded 11 kills on 21 attempts, while hitting at a .381 clip. Kelsi Myers recorded a team-leading 33 assists and tied with Kayleen Webster for a team-best eight digs.
In the first set, Texas jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but a Basch kill sparked a 5-0 San Diego run that was capped on a Torey Ellick kill off a set from Myers to give USD a 7-5 lead. The two teams the sea sawed back and forth for the remainder of the match, and Texas regained the lead for good at 9-8 on a Destinee Hooker kill and went on to claim the first set 25-20.
In the second set, Ellick gave the Toreros the first point on a kill off a set from Myers, but the Longhorns responded with a 9-2 run to gain the momentum and take a commanding seven-point lead at 9-2. USD then answered back with a 6-2 run that was sparked on a Ellick kill and capped on a Basch kill, but that is as close as the Toreros would get, as the Longhorns went on to claim set two 25-16.
In the third and final set, Texas raced out to a 6-3 lead, but the Toreros answered back with a 6-2 run that was ignited on a Basch kill and capped on a Carrie Baird kill to give USD a 9-8 advantage. However, Texas then used a 7-0 run to take back control of the momentum and went on to win the match with a 25-19 win in the third set.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host UC Santa Barbara in their home-opener at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m, start.
