SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team opened the 2009 Nike Soccer Classic with a 2-1 loss to No. 5 ranked Dartmouth Big Green at Torero Stadium on Friday night.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 3-2-0 on the season while Dartmouth improves to 4-0-1.
The Toreros broke the 0-0 tie in the 35th minute on a header by junior forward Marcelo Carminatti. San Diego put a corner kick into play on the far side received by midfielder Charles Blase who one touched it and sent the ball into the penalty box where Carminatti was waiting. Carminatti took off and connected from 10 yards out on a header lifting USD to a 1-0 lead over the Big Green going into halftime.
San Diego returned in the second half giving up two goals to the Dartmouth. The first in the 64th minute as Austin Bowers tied the match 1-1 with the assist going to Lucky Mkosana. The second goal came from Craig Henderson in the 78th minute with the assist going to Daniel Keat.
Goalkeeper Kelin Briones gave up two goals and tallied three more saves on the season. Dartmouth goalkeeper Sean Donovan gave up one goal with three saves. The Toreros outshot Dartmouth 8-7 owning the first half by a margin of 6-2. Both teams tied on corner kicks with five each.
In the early match between No. 15 Michigan State and No. 18 Loyola Marymount, The Spartans defeated the Lions 3-0. Loyola Marymount will face Dartmouth on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros return for the final day of the 2009 San Diego Nike Soccer Classic when they face No. 15 Michigan State Spartans at 2:00 on Sunday, September 20 at Torero Stadium.
