SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 15th ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped their match Saturday afternoon against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 26-24, 21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 13-15 loss, the Toreros fall to 1-3 on the season while the Gauchos improve to 4-1 overall.
Ali Troost led the team in the kills category for the second straight match with 12, tied with Ashton Basch who also recorded 12 kills on the day. Torey Ellick recorded 11 kills on the day. Kelsi Myers tallied 47 assists on the afternoon. Carrie Baird had two solo blocks, while Troost recorded one solo and three block assists.
The Toreros jumped out to a one-set lead over the Gauchos. Battling back and forth for the lead, Santa Barbara kept tying up the game until the very end. After tying the game back up at 24, San Diego was able to regain possession off of a Ashton Basch kill followed by a Gauchos attack error.
In game two, both teams fought back and forth for the lead. The Toreros tied it up at ten until Santa Barbara regained the lead over USD at 12-15. USD fell behind unable to get back the lead as UCSB went on to win 25-21.
The Toreros lost game three 19-25 only to come back in game four to win 25-19. In the fourth set, with the Toreros leading 20-19, Colleen Carlson served up five straight points for USD winning the game on a service ace to take it to a fifth game.
The Toreros won the toss serving first. The Toreros and Gauchos battled for the lead tying it up at 7-7. The Gauchos recorded an attack error giving USD the 8-7 lead at the halfway point. San Diego continued attacking as Carrie Baird went on a four-point run giving the Toreros a 13-11 lead. However the Gauchos went on a run of their own tallying four points to take the match 15-13.
USD takes to the road for a trip to the Rocky Mountains to compete in the Colorado Invitational starting Friday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m. against Colorado followed by a match against Cal Poly on Saturday, September 12.
