Child, Conners and Henderson Pace USD to Sixth Straight Win

PORTLAND, Ore. - Behind an 20-point performance from Sam Child and a 15-point, nine rebound performance from Dominique Conners, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (11-6, 3-0 WCC) ran its winning streak to six with a 59-53 West Coast Conference victory over the University of Portland (11-6, 0-2 WCC) Thursday evening at the Chiles Center.

Child scored her game-high 20 points on a 7-for-16 (.500) performance from the field, including going 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Conners scored 14 of her 15 points in the first half going 5-for-10 (.500) from the field and grabbed eight of her career-high nine rebounds in the first frame as well. Morgan Henderson recorded eight points and led all players with a career-high 14 rebounds. As a team, USD shot .404 from the floor and out rebounded the Pilots 46-28.

In the first half of the game, a Conners jumper ignited a 6-3 San Diego run that was capped on a Sara VanderHorst jumper to give the Toreros the early advantage with 16:38 to play in the frame.

The Pilots then kept to within three over the next five minutes of play. Then with the score at 19-17 in favor of USD, a Emily Hatch jumper sparked a 10-2 Torero run that was capped on a Conners three-point play to give USD its first double-digit lead of the game at 29-19 with 5:03 to go in the half. San Diego would maintain that double-digit lead the remainder of the frame, going into the break up 33-23.

In the second half, the Toreros grabbed the first two baskets; one by VanderHorst and the other by Child, to give USD its biggest lead of the game at 37-23 with 18:44 to go.

Portland then responded with a 7-0 run that was sparked on a Natalie Day lay-up and capped on a Lauren Angel jumper to cut the lead in half at 37-30 with 17:19 to go.

However a Sam Child 3-pointer at 14:49 jump started the Toreros offense again, as they went on a 7-3 San Diego run to give USD back a double-digit lead at 47-37 with 11:50 remaining . The Toreros never looked back as they cruised its way to a 59-53 victory.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Spokane, Wash. To take on the defending WCC champions Gonzaga Bulldogs in a 2 p.m. WCC game.
