Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Behind a double-double from senior outside hitter Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, the 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over the University of San Francisco Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at War Memorial Gym.

With the 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 win, the Toreros improve to 14-4 overall, remain undefeated in WCC action at 4-0 and run their winning streak to six. With the loss, the Dons fall to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in the WCC.

DeGroot led all players with her 12 kills, while also racking up match-best 17 digs. Ali Troost also had a double-digit kill performance as the senior right side recorded 10 kills and had three blocks. Kelsi Myers recorded 42 assists, while helping steer USD to a .248 team attack percentage.

In the first set, it was close in the early going, then with the score knotted at 4-4, a USF attack error ignited a 5-0 Torero run that was capped on a Ashton Basch kill to give USD a 9-4 lead. USD never really looked back as they maintained the five-point lead for a major of the set until they used a 4-0 run late to take a 21-14 lead, before they settled for a 25-17 win.

In the second set, the Toreros opened the frame with a 7-4 run to grab the early momentum. The Dons then responded with a 6-2 run of their own to grab a brief 10-9 lead. The Dons and Toreros then sea-sawed back and forth a bit over the next several points with each team taking its turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Finally with the score knotted at 21, a DeGroot kill sparked a 4-0 Torero run to end the set, and give USD a two sets to none advantage.

In the third and final set, San Diego opened things up with a 4-0 run, but San Francisco would answer back and pull back to within two of a few occasions. Then with the score at 10-9 in favor of the Toreros, a Troost kill off a set form Myers ignited a 7-0 Toreros run that gave USD all the momentum. The Toreros never looked back as they eased their way to a 25-18 win to complete the sweep.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos of Santa Clara University in a 1 p.m. WCC match.
