SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Behind a second consecutive double-double from senior outside hitter Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, the 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to seven with a 3-0 win over Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match.
With the 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 win, the Toreros improve to 15-4 overall, remain undefeated in WCC play at 5-0, and have yet to drop a single set in WCC matches this season. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in the WCC.
DeGroot recorded 10 kills and racked up 12 digs, while also recording a pair of blocks. Ali Troost led the team with 13 kills, recorded eight digs and had three blocks, and Kelsi Myers also recorded a double-double with 37 assists and a team-best 16 digs.
In the first set, it was a teeter-totter battle in the early going, with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger that two. Then with the scored tied at seven, a SCU service error jump started a 3-0 Torero run to give USD some breathing room. The Broncos then kept things close and tied things up twice, but the Toreros never surrendered the lead. Finally with the score knotted at 18, a Troost kill off a set from Katie Hoekman ignited a 5-1 San Diego run to give USD the momentum and a 23-19 lead. The Toreros then held on to claim a 25-20 win.
In the second set, the Toreros grabbed the early momentum as they opened things up with a 5-2 lead. The Broncos then kept things close and never let USD get more than a two-point lead for a majority of the set. Then with the score at 15-14 in favor of the Toreros, an Ashton Basch kill sparked a 5-1 Torero run that was capped on a SCU attack error to give USD a 20-15 edge. The Toreros never looked back as they then eased their way to a 25-20 win, to go into then break up two sets to none.
In the third and final set, the Toreros raced out to a 4-1 lead, before the Broncos answered with a 4-0 run to take a brief 5-4 lead. The two teams then sea sawed back and forth a bit with each team taking its turn with the lead, and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Then with the score at 15-14 in favor of the Toreros, San Diego put the pedal to the medal as a SCU attack error sparked a 10-4 Torero run to close out the match and complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they host Loyola Marymount University in a 7 p.m. WCC match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
