SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team dominated time of possession, but fell, 1-0, to Gonzaga University in a West Coast Conference match at USD's Torero Stadium Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 9-7-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the WCC. With the win, the Zags improve to 8-9-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the WCC.
In the 10th minute of action, Gonzaga's Sarah Rhodes took a corner kick for GU, and sailed the ball into a crowded goal box, where Catherine Cullen was able to put a one-timer past the Torero defense to give the Zags the 1-0 win.
The Toreros has several opportunities not go their way as in the 47th minute of action, Natalie Garcia fired off a shot, that was saved by the GU goalkeeper to end the scoring threat in the early going of the second period. San Diego continued to keep the pressure on the Zags defense as they dominated time of possession and outshot the Bulldogs 5-2 in the second frame, but were unable to come up with a score.
USD outshot the Zags 7-5 for the game, and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
USD's Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal as she allowed one goal and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Lauren Ames, was credited with the win, as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host Pepperdine University in a 7:30 p.m. game at Torero Stadium. This will be USD's home finale as they will honor its senior class of Jackie Zinke and Addie Cartan in a pregame ceremony.
