SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three different Toreros recorded double-digit kills to help propel the 18th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over visiting Santa Clara University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-21, 25-14, 25-8 win, the Toreros improve to 21-4 overall, remain perfect in the WCC at 11-0 and have extended its season-high winning streak to 13. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the WCC.
Ali Troost recorded a match-high 15 kills on 26 swings, while only committing two attack errors to post a .500 hitting percentage. Amy Mahinalani DeGroot recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Chloe Ferrari recorded 10 kills and hit for a .714 clip. Ferrari's .714 hitting percentage is the sixth best single-match hitting percentage in USD history. C'era Oliveira recorded 16 digs, while Kelsi Myers recorded 32 assists in helping steer the USD offense to a .352 hitting percentage.
In the first set, it was a close nit battle in the early going, then with the score at 4-4, a Troost kill ignited a 6-2 Torero run to give USD some breathing room and a 10-6 lead. The Toreros would maintain that lead for a majority of the frame before taking its biggest lead at 23-17. The Broncos then rallied back and pulled to within two at 23-21, but San Diego dug in and closed things out with a DeGroot kill and a SCU attack error to give San Diego a 25-21 win.
In the second set, the Toreros wasted no time in getting going as an Ashton Basch kill jump started a 10-4 Torero run to begin the frame. San Diego never let its foot off the gas as they then put together a 9-5 run to take a 19-9 advantage, and they never looked back as they went on to claim set two 25-14. In this frame, USD hit for a match-best .484 clip.
In the third and final set, it was more domination by the Toreros, as again USD raced out to a 10-3 lead, and never really let the Broncos get back into things. USD would only allow the Broncos to score eight points and the Torero defense held Santa Clara to a -.127 hitting percentage, while USD hit for a .467 clip.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday in a 1 p.m. WCC match against the University of San Francisco.
