LAIE, Hawaii - Behind a 16-point effort from both Emily Hatch and Morgan Woodrow, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (5-2) picked up an 84-71 victory over BYU-Hawaii (1-4) Thursday evening in a non-conference game at the Hakilau Invitational.
Hatch picked up her second double-double of the season, as she recorded her 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field while also pulling down 13 rebounds. Woodrow scored her 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the floor, while Nicole Ballestero added in nine points and Dominique Conners, Kameron Knutson and Nya Mason all chipped in with eight points apiece. As a team, USD shot .455 from the field and out rebounded the Seasiders 46-24.
In the first half, it was a close game over the first seven minutes of action, then with the score knotted at 15-15, a Sam Child three-pointer ignited a 9-0 Toreros run that was capped on a Conners jumper to give USD a 24-15 lead with 10:28 remaining. BYU-Hawaii then answered right back with a 6-0 run to pull back to within three at 24-21 with 9:06 remaining. San Diego would then respond with an 18-7 run over the final nine minutes of play to take a 42-29 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Toreros came out hitting on all cylinders as they went on a 12-2 run over the first five minutes of play to take a commanding 54-31 lead with 14:51 remaining. The Toreros never looked back as they went on to build their lead to as many as 27 at 69-42 with 7:08 to go. USD would then ease is way to an 84-71 victory.
USD will return to action on Saturday as they play future WCC member BYU in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at the Hukilau Invitational.
