LAIE, Hawaii - A pair of University of San Diego women's basketball players recorded double-digits, but it wasn't enough as future WCC member BYU claimed a 70-44 win at the Hakilau Invitational Saturday evening in a non-conference game.
Junior guard Morgan Woodrow led the Toreros (5-3) offense as she scored 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while also dishing out five assists. The only other Torero in double figures was senior guard Sara VanderHorst, who had 10 on 3-for-7 shooting from the field and Emily Hatch recorded a team-leading 11 rebounds. As a team, USD shot .326 from the field and were out rebounded 39-35.
In the first half, a Dominique Conners jumper started a 10-0 Torero run over the first 2:22 of the game. BYU's Mindy Bonham finally broke the run with a jumper to launch a 10-0 Cougar run to even the score at 10-all with 14:46 to go. The Cougars (5-3) then went on a 22-3 run over the remainder of the frame to take a 32-13 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Cougars would quickly build up a 21-point lead over the first four minute of action to take control of the momentum. BYU never looked back as they went on to build up a 26-point lead and they were able to hold onto that lead to the end of the game.
The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Long Beach State to take on the 49ers in a 7 p.m. game inside the Walter J. Pyramid.
