LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (6-3) outscored Long Beach State University (1-9) 34-20 in the second half to claim a 68-53 win Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at the Walter J. Pyramid.
Senior forward Emily Hatch led the Toreros offense as she recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Morgan Woodrow was also a huge part of the win, as she played all 40 minutes and scored 12 points, while pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out six assists. Dominique Conners was the third Torero in double figures as she had 13 points, while Sam Child recorded 12 points. As a team, USD shot .419 from the field and out rebounded the 49ers 54-39.
In a game of two halves, the Toreros were able to make the necessary adjustments at half time and completely dominated LBSU in the final 20 minutes of play. After being out rebounded 24-22 in the first frame, USD out rebounded the 49ers 32-15 in the second, and held them to 18 percent shooting (5-for-28) in the second frame to cruise to victory.
With USD leading 34-33 at half, San Diego opened the second frame on an 18-4 run over the first 11:44, as Woodrow 3-pointer ignited a run that saw four different USD players record at least one point and gave San Diego complete control of the momentum with a 52-37 lead.
The 49ers would make two small runs to pull back to within 12 at 55-43 with 8:50 to go and again at 64-52 with 4:06 to play, but in the end the Toreros proved to be too strong as they then eased their way to a 15-point win.
In the first half, it was a much different story, as the game was a close nit battle right from the get-go. After the first media timeout and USD leading 9-8, a Hatch jumper ignited a 10-2 Torero run to give the USD a seven-point lead with 9:45 to go. Long Beach would then begin to chip away at the lead and eventually tied things up at 28-28 on a Tipesa Moorer jumper with 2:58 to go. LBSU would then go up two at 33-31 with 45 seconds remaing, before Hatch hit a half-court buzzer beater to give San Diego a 34-33 lead going into the break.
USD will return to action on Saturday as they host Northern Arizona University inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
