San Diego, Calif.- With the help of seven runs in the first two innings and four hits apiece from Kevin Muno and James Meador, the 19th-ranked University of San Diego baseball squad swept Indiana University in Saturday's double-header, beating the Hoosiers 9-4 in the second game at Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros (3-0) have taken the first three of the four-game set against the Hoosiers, tallying 34 runs against the Big Ten opponent, including 18 between the two games on Saturday. The top of the lineup, center fielder Muno, catcher Nick McCoy, and right fielder Meador, combined to go 9-of-13 from the plate, driving in seven of the team's nine runs.
Left-handed starter Sammy Solis picked up his first win since February 20th of last year, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four and walking two. Senior right-hander Matt Thomson recorded the save for holding the Hoosiers scoreless in 1.2 innings pitched with five strikeouts.
The Hoosiers picked up the game's first two runs in the top of first frame after Solis retired the first two batters with ground-outs but relinquished two unearned runs when catcher Dylan Swift drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
USD quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the game's advantage. The top three hitters of the Toreros lineup each generated an extra-base hit and scored the three runs. Muno recorded a lead-off triple to ignite the Toreros hot start, which was followed by McCoy's RBI double. Meador added a double of his own to left field to score McCoy. Designated hitter Mike Ferraro drove in Meador with a sacrifice fly to finalize the USD runs for the inning.
The Toreros came back in the bottom of the second inning scoring four more runs, all via the long ball. After a Victor Sanchez single, Muno smashed a screaming two-run home run down the left field line to set the score at 5-2. Two batters later, Meador hit a two-run no-doubter to straightaway center to score McCoy and bring it to 7-2.
San Diego added two insurance runs in the eighth, with Meador adding his fourth RBI of the game to score Victor Sanchez, who reached on an error.
Meador went 4-for-5 with the two extra-base hits while also scoring two runs in the game. For both of Saturday's two contests, the senior reached base eight times in ten plate appearances, registering seven hits, five RBIs, and five runs scored.
Muno also finished 4-for-5 at the plate in game two, falling short of the cycle by a double.
