SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of san Diego baseball team dropped the series finale to Indiana University, 7-5, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium. Despite the loss, the Toreros captured the season-opening series by winning the first three games.
The first three innings of the game went sailing along, as the two teams were engaged In a pitchers duel between USD's Darrin Campbell and Indiana's Walker Stadler. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Campbell got Micha Johnson to strikeout, and then got Jerrud Sabourin to ground out to continue his dominance on the mound. As the next batter, Alex Dickerson, stepped to the plate, a down pour of rain came and the umpires called for an approximate 20-minute rain delay. Once play resumed, the Hoosiers (1-3) took over, as Dickerson led things off with a solo home run over the right field fence for the first of four Indiana runs in the inning. The remaining three runs came on a Sterling Mack run-scoring double a USD fielding error and a Jerry Kleman RBI single to give the Hosiers a 4-0 advantage
San Diego (3-1) was able to cut the lead in half in their half of the fourth inning. Bryan Haar got things started with a towering solo home run over the left field fence. Chris Engell kept the rally going as he tripled to right field and two batters later, Kalei Hanawahine drove in Engell with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, moving the score to 4-2.
After Indiana took back one run in the fifth inning, USD responded with one run in the seventh. Kevin Muno got things started with a single up the middle and move to second when James Meador flew out to centerfield. Muno then moved to third on a balk, and came home on a balk to cut the lead to 5-3.
Then in the ninth inning, the Hoosiers were able to add an insurance run, but USD could only score one run in the ninth on a Meador RBI single to left field, scoring Jon Hotta, who had walked, to put the game at its final of 7-5.
Offensively for the Toreros, Hanawahine led the way as he went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Steven Chatwood also looked solid as he went 2-for-4 with one home run and one RBI.
Campbell (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on two hits in 3.2 innings of work, while also striking out six. Stadler (1-0) was credited with the win for the Hoosiers as he allowed three runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they host Cal State Northridge in a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
