SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 18th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 7-1 non-conference decision to Cal State Northridge Tuesday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
San Diego (3-2) was able to jump on the scoreboard first as they scored one run on two hits in the first inning. Nick McCoy got things started with a single through the left side and moved to third when James Meador reached on an error by the third baseman. Bryan Haar then brought in McCoy with a RBI single to right field to give USD the early momentum.
It was all Matadors after that as CSUN (2-2) scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the game. The Northridge runs came on a RBI fielder's choice, a Ridge Carpenter two-run single and a Ryan Pineda RBI single to give CSUN a 4-1 edge.
The Matadors would then score one run in each of the sixth and ninth inning to put the game at its final of 7-1.
San Diego had its chances to push across runs in several innings, but was unable to get them across as they stranded 12 batters on base.
Offensively for the Toreros, McCoy led the way as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
USD Starter Casey Schmidt (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Justin Gorski (1-0) was credited with the win for the Matadors as he allowed no runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they open a four-game series with cross-town rival San Diego State. The game will be at Tony Gwynn Stadium and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
