SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team tried to put on a last inning rally, but it fell short as San Diego State University claimed a 9-5 win Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros (4-4) got on the scoreboard first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kevin Muno got things started with a walk and moved to second on a Matt Moynihan sacrifice bunt. James Meador then drove in Muno with an RBI single. Zach Walters kept things going when he reached on an error by the second baseman, which moved Meador to third and allowed Walters to reach second. Meador then scored when Bryan Haar grounded out to the second baseman, to move the score to 2-0.
San Diego then doubled its lead in to bottom of the fifth round as they scored two runs on two hits. Muno again got things started with a walk and moved to second on a pass ball. After Moynihan moved Muno to third on a bunt single, Meador drove in Muno with a double to centerfield. Walters drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field to give USD a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The Aztecs (3-5) finally got on the score board in the top of the seventh inning as they score four runs on three hits. The SDSU runs came on a Mitch Blackburn run-scoring double, a Jomel Torres RBI single and a Brandon Meredith two-run double to even the score at 4-4.
After the Aztecs scored five more run in the top of the ninth inning, San Diego dug in to try and rally. Nick McCoy got things started with a single to left field and moved to second when Muno drew a walk. After McCoy moved to third when Moynihan reached on a fielder's choice, Meador drove in McCoy with a RBI single up the middle , to put the game at its final of 9-5.
Meador led the USD offense as he went 3-for-4 with one double and three RBI.
Matt Thomson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed five runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Kegan Sharp (1-1) was credited with the win for the Aztecs as he allowed one run on one hit in 3.2 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to play Cal State Fullerton in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
