Toreros Too Much for Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team used a huge second half to defeat the University of San Francisco, 67-52, Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at War Memorial Gym.

Dominique Conners led all scorers with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor. Sam Child was the second USD player in double figures with 11 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the floor and senior forward Morgan Henderson scored 11 points to pull to with two points of breaking 1,000 for her career. As a team, USD shot 50 percent from the field and out rebounded the Dons 36-33.

In the first half, the Toreros jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the first three minutes of action, as a Dominique Conners lay-up ignited the run and a Conners lay-up capped things off to give the Toreros the early momentum.

The Dons then answered back with a 5-0 run of their own to knot things up at 7-7 with 16:23 to go in the half. Then with the score tied at nine, a Nya Mason jumper sparked a 11-4 Toreros run that was book ended on a Sam Child jumper to give the Toreros its biggest lead of the half at 20-13.

The Dons would eventually pull back to within one at 25-24 on a Rheina Ale 3-pointer with 5:47 to go, but San Diego would close out the half on a 6-2 run to take a 31-26 lead into the break.

In the second half, it was a sea saw battle over the first couple of minutes. Then with the score at 34-30 in favor of the Toreros, San Diego put together a 10-4 run that was sparked on a Conners lay-up and capped on a Child jumper to give USD its first double-digit lead of the game at 44-34 with 13:38 to go.

The Toreros would then use a 8-0 run that was ignited on a Child lay-up and capped on a Felicia Wijenberg lay-up to give the Toreros a 15-point edge at 52-37 with 9:55 to go. USD would eventually go on to build up its lead to as many as 19 on a Julia Bennett free throw with 4:19 to go. The Toreros never looked back as they cruised their way to a 67-52 win.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they remain in the Bay Area and travel to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos of Santa Clara University in a 2 p.m. game.
