FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped an 11-4 decision to No. 18 Cal State Fullerton Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
San Diego (4-5) wasted no time in scoring as in the first inning Kevin Muno got things started with a walk. Muno then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the CSF pitcher. Zach Walters drove in Muno when he hit a grounder to the first baseman, who then booted the ball, allowing Muno to score and Walters to safely reach first. Austin Green kept things rolling with a single through the right side, and after Walters and Green moved up a base on a pass ball, Tony Strazzara drove them in with a two-run single to give USD a 3-0 lead.
The Titans (3-4) then responded with one run on no hits in the bottom of the first inning. The CSF run came when the bases were loaded, and AJ Griffin hit Billy Marcoe to cut the lead to 3-1.
Fullerton then took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as they scored five runs on three hits. The Titan runs came on RBI singles by Gary Brown Nick Ramirez, and Carlos Lopez and a Marcoe RBI fielder's choice to give Fullerton a 6-3 lead.
CSF then added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning as they scored two runs on a Brown two-run homer over the centerfield fence to push the lead to five at 8-3.
San Diego took back one run on one hit in the top of the sixth inning. Green took the first offering he saw from David Hurlbut and sent it over the left field fence for his first home run of the season, moving the score to 8-4.
The Titans then went on to score two runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh inning to cap their scoring for the day.
Offensively for the Toreros, Green led the way as he went 2-for-4 with one home run and one RBI.
AJ Griffin (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed eight runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Kevin Rath (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Titans as he allowed three unearned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host the University of Kentucky in a 2 p.m. game inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
