Rally Falls Short in 8-4 Loss to Hawaii

March 29, 2010

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore catcher Zack Kometani goes yard twice, but it wasn't enough as the University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 8-6 decision to the University of Hawaii Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.

With the Toreros (14-12) trailing 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, USD began to rally as Mike Ferraro got things started with a single to right field. After Ferraro moved up to second on an Austin Green groundout, Kometani stepped to the plate and launched his second home run of the game over the left centerfield fence to cut the deficit in half. Victor Sanchez then kept the rally going with a double to right centerfield, but USD could not push him across to leave the game at its final of 8-6.

Hawaii (14-11) got on the scoreboard first as in the top of the fourth inning they pushed across one run on one hit. The Rainbow run came on a Jeffery Van Doornum run-scoring triple to give UH a 1-0 lead.

San Diego answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth inning scoring one run on tree hits. With two outs, Kometani rocketed his first collegiate home run over the right centerfield fence to even things up at 1-1.

The Rainbow then regained the momentum in the top of the sixth inning as they scored four runs on a Christian Johnson grand slam over the right field fence to take a 5-1 lead.

After Hawaii tagged on another run in the top of the seventh inning, the Toreros would take back a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Matt Moynihan run-scoring triple and a Green RBI single to centerfield to move the score to 6-3.

UH would then take back those two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cap their scoring for the day and the Toreros would take back one run in the eighth inning to round off their scoring for the day.

Offensively for the Toreros, Kometani led the way as he went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Ferraro had a good day at the plate as well as he went 3-for-5 with one run scored.

Matt Thomson (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work. Zach Gallagher (2-1) was credited with the win for the Rainbow as he allowed three runs on 11 hits in 6.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will take the rest of the eek off before traveling to play No. 2 Arizona State University on Monday in a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
