(Las Vegas, NV) - Similar to the regular-season matchups with the University of Portland, the 6th-seed Toreros did not have an answer for the No. 3 seed Portland Pilots in falling 72-57 in tonight's quarterfinal matchup. With the loss the Toreros complete their season with an overall record of 11-21. Torero freshman Ken Rancifer (Oakland, CA) was USD's lone bright star as he scored a season-best 20 points. The 6-5 forward canned 8-of-13 shots, including 4-7 in threes. Senior Brandon Johnson closed out his brilliant career as USD's all-time leader in points (1,790) and assists (525). He is the only player in WCC history to lead his team in both career statistical categories.
For Portland, four starters reached double figure scoring as the Pilots were led by guard T.J. Campbell (15 points, 8 assists). He was followed by Jared Stohl (13), Robin Smeulders (12) and Ethan Niedermeyer (11). Portland shot 49% for the game and 75% from the free throw line, while USD managed 41.9% shooting and 66.7% from the charity stripe. The Pilots will face #2 Saint Mary's in the second semifinal.
Following Rancifer, USD was led by Roberto Mafra (8 points), Brandon Johnson (7) and three players with six points - Devin Ginty, Chris Lewis and Patrick McCollum.
