EUGENE, Ore. - The 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team was unable to extend its win streak to nine straight Tuesday evening, falling 13-4 to 22nd-ranked University of Oregon at PK Park.
The Ducks (31-18; 10-11 Pac-10) put a crooked number on the board - all with two quick outs - in the 1st inning and never looked back, scoring six runs on four hits, which proved to be enough to snap the Toreros' eight-game win streak. Paul Eshleman was walked with the bases loaded to score the first run, while Marcus Piazzisi smacked a three-run bases clearing double before getting a chance to cross the plate on a triple by Dylan Gavin to right center. The Ducks scored their sixth run on Curtis Raulinaitis' RBI single to left.
Oregon would pad its lead in the second, as Eddie Rodriguez, who finished his day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, hit a solo-shot to left field over the visitor bullpen.
The Toreros (31-17; 15-0 WCC) got one back in the top of the third as Bryan Haar managed to put a little life back in the USD offense with a solo home run to left center. But the Ducks responded with two more in the bottom half to all but close the door on a potential San Diego rally.
OU, which totaled six extra-base hits for the game, would put up four more runs - one in the 6th and three in the 8th - before all was said and done.
USD added three runs on three hits and a walk in the eighth as Matt Moynihan's RBI single scored a run, while the remaining two runs were scored on a passed ball and wild pitch.
San Diego totaled nine hits on the day and was lead by Kevin Muno's 2-for-4 performance, followed by Haar and Moynihan, which each had one hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
Freshman right-hander Mike Dedrick, who quickly retired the firt two batters faced, ultimately lasted just 2/3 of an inning after allowing six runs on four hits and three walks. San Diego, in its fifth game in as many days, would shuffle through five pitchers in relief.
For Oregon, Joey Housey (3-1) was credited with the win after going three innings while allowing one run on four hits.
The Toreros will look to get back to familiar winning ways next weekend, as San Diego returns to conference play when it sqaures off against Pepperdine University in a three game series May 21st-23rd.
